5 Natural Allergy Remedies You Haven’t Tried Yet

lemon, lavender oil and grapefruit oil

Springtime allergies come as no surprise to native Tennesseans. This year, Memphis, Knoxville and Chattanooga all ranked within the top 25 on the Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America (AAFA)’s list of 2016 Spring Allergy Capitals.

If you’re looking for a more natural way to provide relief to your allergies, try these 5 ideas:

Sinus Irrigation

One of the more popular natural allergy remedies is nasal irrigation, using something like a neti pot. You fill the pot with a saline (saltwater) solution and pour it into one nostril, then allow it to drain out the other. This helps remove the mucus and allergens from your nasal cavity. You need to be careful because it can cause infection if not done properly, according to the Mayo Clinic.

Sinus Massage

Massage has been shown as a good way to relieve sinus pressure. Using your fingers, start massaging in small circles around your forehead and cheeks, moving to the sides and bridge of the nose and the eyebrow ridge. Finish by massaging around the jawline, temples and the crown of your head. These gentle movements on your face may alleviate a sinus headache and help with drainage as well. In addition to helping clear your sinuses, the massage feels good on your congested face.

Butterbur

Butterbur is a shrub used as a natural allergy remedy in lieu of antihistamines. Studies funded by the National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health, part of the National Institute of Health (NIH), found that butterbur worked as well as antihistamines on allergy symptoms. Butterbur can often be found in capsule form at your local pharmacy or supermarket.

Acupuncture

This Chinese treatment involves a practitioner placing needles in parts of your body to counteract allergy symptoms. Several clinical trials have shown positive results using acupuncture to relieve allergy symptoms, but it’s not fully proven yet, according to Healthline. The Mayo Clinic says there is not a specific way to prepare for your first acupuncture appointment, but it’s always best to consult with your doctor before beginning any new allergy treatment.

Protecting Your Home

Your environment can heavily impact your allergies. Some people with allergies find relief using a high-efficiency particulate air (HEPA) filter in their vacuum, which helps trap allergens. Mold and dry air can exacerbate your allergies and alleviate your symptoms. Humidifiers help combat that and clear out the dry air in your home. Washing your bedding frequently and taking off your shoes before entering the home can help keep allergens at bay too.
