Science has proven that there are a lot of good reasons to get lost in a good book. Here are some of the health benefits of reading.
Reduce Stress
In a study conducted by the University of Sussex, the act of reading was found to reduce stress levels more effectively than listening to music, going for a walk or drinking a cup of tea. You don’t need to finish a book to get the full benefit. The study also found that reading for as little as six minutes reduced stress levels by 60%.
Develop Social Skills
Learning about others’ plights and absorbing yourself in their characters helps you develop social skills and empathy according to research published in Trends in Cognitive Studies.
Enhance Memory
Reading activates the areas of the brain that process language, cognition and movement. These types of stimulation can enhance recollection.
Delay Alzheimer’s Disease
A study conducted by the National Institutes of Health found that older people who regularly engage in mentally stimulating activities like reading or playing cards see a 47% decline in the risk of developing Alzheimer’s.
Promote Better Sleep
Establishing a pre-bedtime routine can help you sleep more soundly, according to the National Sleep Foundation. Reading a book before bed is a relaxing way to wind down from the day so you can fall asleep faster and stay asleep longer. Do you like to read? Tell us what you’re reading by commenting below.
