7 ways to manage uncertainty about job security

Economic uncertainty, layoffs, and concern for the potential for AI to replace jobs are creating stress across all industries. While some companies are more affected right now, uncertainty affects employees everywhere.

“Job security and financial strain are common stressors for employees across the nation,” says Jennifer Rusk, a behavioral health case manager with BlueCross BlueShield of Tennessee. “Many families are living paycheck to paycheck. At the same time, many companies are looking to find ways to cut spending as well.”

How does workplace uncertainty affect mental and physical health

Jennifer Rusk: Most people need employment to make ends meet. As a result, workplace uncertainty can cause anxiety. And anxiety can lead to feelings of hopelessness or depression. It can also cause physical symptoms, such as increased heart rate, upset stomach, high blood pressure, and headaches. Over time, these symptoms can lead to a decreased quality of life and poor health.

The rapid advancement of AI is contributing to workplace uncertainty and related stress. Employees are trying to learn AI systems in hopes that will make their jobs easier. There is also fear that AI could replace many duties, potentially replacing employees.

Stress can show up differently for everyone. Common warning symptoms include irritability, fatigue, lack of enjoyment of hobbies, or muscle aches. Pay attention to your body and mood to notice any changes that persist for more than a few days.

7 strategies for managing workplace stress

Jennifer Rusk: Here are ways to help cope with work uncertainty:

  1. Recognize catastrophic thinking. This is when a person thinks that the worst-case scenario is going to happen. It is important to recognize when you are using unhealthy thought patterns. Remind yourself that because something could happen, it doesn’t mean it will.
  2. Talk to people you trust. Share how you are feeling with people you trust. They may be able to provide perspective or just be a shoulder to lean on. You do not have to keep feeling alone.
  3. Remind yourself that you have options. Even if the worst-case scenario were to occur, it could open a new set of opportunities. Trust yourself to use the skills that you have used before to try new opportunities.
  4. Focus on the present. Employees can maintain productivity by focusing on the present. If you struggle with anxious thoughts, let them go or tell a trusted friend. Mindfulness techniques can help reduce stress and help you be present in the moment. Breathing techniques can also reduce anxiety.
  5. Stay prepared. It is important to be prepared for the unknown. This can help lower anxiety. Keep your resume updated and research what jobs are available. Network and ask colleagues about their jobs and job satisfaction.
  6. Maintain work-life balance. Do more of what you love and what makes you happy. Maintaining a healthy balance between work and life can help prevent burnout.
  7. Seek professional help. If you find your anxiety persists, find a therapist. They can work with you to help you process your feelings and find ways to cope with stress.

How to talk with your manager

Jennifer Rusk: Employees should express concerns about job security in a non-blaming way. They should share their feelings with managers in an individual setting. Managers should be open to hearing from employees and serve as a sounding board for concerns.

Resources available

Jennifer Rusk: Your company may have an employee assistance program that can provide you with a therapist or other resources. Digital stress relief resources and guided meditation videos online may also help.

“Change is inevitable,” Jennifer says. “Talking about how you are feeling can help manage anxiety about things that are out of your control. Self-care is also an important part of managing anxiety.”
